Homeschool Freedom in Montana: A Legacy of Parental Rights

This document was written to preserve and pass on the critical history of homeschooling in Montana and to remind families that these freedoms were hard-won and must be actively protected. Homeschooling was legalized in Montana in 1983, and since that time, the right to home educate has faced repeated and ongoing attacks. 

This project came into being through many conversations and historical gatherings with Steve White, the widely respected godfather of homeschooling in Montana. Steve's decades of leadership, political wisdom, and steadfast defense of homeschooling rights form the backbone of this history. 

As homeschooling continues to rise, families must understand the battels that have been and are still being fought, recognize the threats that remain, and stay educated, united, and ready to respond when called upon. Besides preserving history, we hope this resource will equip families to recognize future challenges, and serve as an authoritative reference guide for homeschooling families-regularly updated and made available through Homeschool Montana-so that we never take for granted the God-given right to home educate our children and remain ever vigilant in protecting it.
